The CDIO™ Initiative is an international collaborative process of reflection and improvement of engineering education; it aims to refocus the training of engineers around the activities currently carried out by engineers in a professional situation (Conceive, Design, Implement, Operate).

Telecom Bretagne is currently the only establishment in France to have joined this initiative, which includes over forty universities from around the world (MIT, Chalmers University in Sweden, KTH (Denmark), Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal, QUT and the University of Sydney , University of Colorado at Boulder, Tsinghua University, ..).

The CDIO has defined a repository of acquired learning (the CDIO syllabus), teaching methods and standards for evaluation. Its initiative is not intended to reduce the scientific aspects of engineering education but rather, put them back into perspective with reference to the core profession.

The CDIO Syllabus covers the skills desired by all kinds of engineer.
It consists of four parts:
1. Technical knowledge and reasoning
2. Professional and personal skills
3. Interpersonal skills: teamwork and communication
4. Engineering activities and their contexts

Telecom Bretagne uses this syllabus for the training of general and specialist engineers. It is also a tool for discussion with industrial and academic partners.
