Modern Languages and Culture Department

Since the creation of the school, the work and aims of the Languages Department have constantly evolved. The school was founded with the aim of training telecoms engineers able to export French techniques and products. The founders considered an excellent standard in foreign languages to be indispensible for French engineers to play a significant role on foreign markets. This avant garde principle meant that the Languages Department was responsible for intensive language teaching of three foreign languages in the initial project. For technical reasons this number was later reduced to two foreign languages (one of which English) and the third as an option.

In 1977 there were 5 permanent members of staff and about 20 part-time lecturers who were almost solely concerned with language teaching. Today's Department retains some aspects of 25 years ago but many things have changed. Since 1983 the Department has taken on a large part of the school's international relations activities. International policy is determined by the Head of Studies but the Languages Department has a key role in the implementation of this policy.

For the past 13 years we have successfully undertaken research projects, which is in itself an extremely rare achievement for language departments in engineering schools. LCI department members carry out research within the GLAT research group. Each year we publish a dozen articles and colleagues actively participate in national and international congresses.

In order to maintain our position among France's best engineering schools we plan to strengthen our international relations, to consolidate areas of research and, above all, to intensify experiments in the important field of New Technologies applied to Teaching, a field in which a School of Telecommunications should naturally show the way.
