A method for adapting a compression mode for digital data during their transmission characterised in that it includes the following steps implemented by a communication terminal capable of implementing at least two compression algorithms :

- classification (201) of data to be transmitted in distinct N flows, - analysis (203, 204) of each flow to determine the first characteristic values,
- analysis (202) of transmission conditions over the physical link to determine the second characteristic values - combination (205-207), for each compression algorithm that the terminal is able to implement, of first and second characteristic values via a performance function to calculate a performance score,
- selection (208), for each identified flow, of the compression algorithm with the best performance score.
