Serge Guelton, Computer Science dept., defended his thesis Octobre 7 2011 at Télécom ParisTech.

Abstract : Heterogeneous computers—platforms that make use of multiple specialized devices to achieve high throughput or low energy consumption—are difficult to program. Hardware vendors usually provide compilers from a C dialect to their machines, but complete application rewriting is frequently required to take advantage of them. In this thesis, we propose a new approach to building bridges between regular applications written in C and these dialects. From an analysis of the hardware constraints, we propose original code transformations that can meet those constraints, and we combine them using a completely programmable pass manager that can handle the complex compilation flows required by the code generation process for multiple targets. It makes it possible to build a collection of compiler based on the same infrastructure while targeting different architectures. All the code transformations are done at the source level using the PIPS source-to-source compiler framework. New transformations are detailed using denotational semantics on a simplified language and have been combined to build four different compilers : an OpenMP directive generator, a retargetable multimedia instruction generator for SSE, AVX and Neon, an assembly code generator for an FPGA-based image processor and a CUDA generator.

Mots-clés : compilation, calcul hétérogène.

45% of Internet users read the French regional daily press (PQR) paper at least once a week, and only 19% read it online. Godefroy Dang Nguyen, deputy scientific director and professor at Telecom Bretagne, Sylvain Dejean, an economist and coordinator of Gis M @ rsouin and Adrien Souquet, a statistician at the regional observatory Opsis, publish the results of the first phase of their study “the regional daily press (PQR) in the digital age.”

This project was conducted with support from the Ministry of Culture and Communication through the Deps (Research Department, Planning and Statistics) and Gis “Culture-media & digital technology.”

Two versions, two readerships

The factors governing readership of the regional daily press differ depending on whether the reader uses print or online versions. Readers of the paper edition are more attached to their locality and loyalty to this format is more marked in small towns. It mostly concerns people aged 50 and older and non-graduates. While 65% of Internet users over 65 read the regional daily press regularly, only 12% view it online. Reading online is not linked to territorial attachment but rather to the daily use of the Internet. It is stronger among the younger generations, although not systematically: 32% of Internet users aged 18-24 read the paper version and only 18% of them follow it online. Their main source of information being the national news sites: 49% of them go on national news sites at least once a week.

The importance of gossip

“- Have you heard about the new neighborhood association?”- “It’s in the paper!”.
The results of the study show that to talk about local news increases the likelihood of reading articles online and those (regional newspaper) readers are more likely to share articles through social networks than readers of the national press (27% compared with 22%). Note that 51% of them are sensitive to the development of their region on the web. 79% of Internet users who read their local newspaper online, want mostly local information. However, hyper local information (city, district,), are found primarily on dedicated sites (blogs associations, neighborhoods …).
One of the challenges of the regional daily press online could be to reclaim every way of describing or showing or commenting on any area, however small. Future developments should end up by offering a full array of local news enhanced with the new tools and uses of digital technology.

The students’ association hopes that foreign students will participate in even greater numbers next year.
What is the “integration period” at the school? It’s a period lasting about two weeks during which parties and various activities are organized to welcome the new intake of students. The Wei weekend marks the end of the integration period and is a time of fun and friendliness for all the students on campus.

This is Telecom Bretagne’s first female sponsor. Some may think, rightly, that this was a long wait, for a school founded nearly 35 years ago. One can only say that despite the long wait it has been a real success… Thanks to her exceptional charisma and natural empathy with young people, Mari-Noelle Jégo-Laveissière communicated well with the students. She spoke truthfully and frankly about her career and the professional and personal challenges she has overcome during her time with the France Telecom Group. The students clearly found her speech inspirational.
Jean Monnet Chairs are awarded on criteria of excellence for teachers in higher education and renowned specialists in the field of European integration.

Engineers trained in issues of European law within the context of the information society

Annie Blandin was honoured for her work in the field of European law. The chair, which was awarded by the European Commission, is entitled “European Union and Information Society”. It is in addition to six chairs the Jean Monnet Centre d’excellence in Rennes recently renewed by the Commission. At the formal start of the new year in November Annie Blandin will give an inaugural lecture where she will present her project. In 2011, 30 Jean Monnet Chairs were awarded by the European Commission on a global scale.

As part of this work project, Annie Blandin aims to “strengthen the Telecom Bretagne syllabus concerning European law and the information society to enrich the range of skills enabling engineers to evolve in an international and multicultural context. Knowledge sharing, notably with business, will make it possible to compare different points of view on the specificity of the European approach to regulation of digital activities. ”

In this context, there will be some modifications made to the current law programmes at Telecom Bretagne to give them synergy and increase impact and quality. In addition to coordinating with six Jean Monnet Chairs at the University of Rennes 1 and Rennes 2, Annie Blandin will build on the experience of language teachers from Telecom Bretagne in the teaching of intercultural studies. A specific course for foreign engineering students, is being prepared within the framework of the international masters programmes at the School,. It will involve, at first, students following the mastère “Networks and information systems for companies’ made available by Telecom-Bretagne to the Instituto Technologico Autonomo in Mexico.

Instruction provided will combine fundamental knowledge on the functioning of the Union, in a comparative perspective (with NAFTA), and specific knowledge on European regulation pertaining to information technology. This project is part of the activities carried out at the Jean Monnet Centre d’excellence under the UNESCO Chair on Regional Integration and the CNRS International research group on the same topic.

Research focuses on Information Society law in a multidisciplinary perspective

The link with research is a guarantee of the quality of teaching. The research themes will go from studying the legal framework for digital activities (copyright, data protection, regulation of the telecommunications market) to examining the conditions in which the technique can be used for legal purposes.
The arrival of a European lecturer specialized in Internet law who will spend one month at the school should add further educational food for thought. The goal ultimately is to create a cluster or network of research lecturers in Europe working around the theme of European law and the information society. This pole represents an added incentive factor for students interested in doing a PhD in the field.

Two events will be organized to take stock of this research. In 2012, a multidisciplinary conference (law, economics, and engineering) will be held in the Jean Monnet Centre d’excellence on the subject of the protection and enhancement of digital content in Europe. It will be followed in 2014, by a seminar open to the public focused on European activities and the link between innovation and law (privacy by design, for example).

The operating costs of the chair are partially covered by the endowment of € 45,000 awarded by the European Union.

The creation of this new chair is associated with the forthcoming inclusion of h Telecom Bretagne in the Jean Monnet Centre d’excellence in Rennes.
