Logo Fête de la science 2010Télécom Bretagne will be present at the “Village des sciences” (Science Village) in Brest, which takes place at the University of Western Brittany this year, at the Victor Ségalen Faculty of Letters, from Friday, October 22nd, to Sunday, October 24th. Professors and students from the school will participate in two stands: “Very High-speed Optical Communications” and “Télécom Bretagne Robotics Club”. The Téléfanfare band will also be on the scene, playing music for this increasingly recognized national event to make science accessible to the general public.

Very high-speed optical communications

Télécom Bretagne professors and doctoral students will give a demonstration of an optical system that is able to transmit data by a beam of light, not only across fiber optics, but also through the air (fiberless optical transmission), making it possible to reach data transmission speeds of 1 Gigabit/sec. The data transmitted over this system will be embodied in the real-time visualization of high-definition (HD) video streaming on a laptop computer and/or flat screen.

The public will be able to watch a film and interact with the transmitting beam of light, in order to observe various phenomena associated with fiberless optical transmission.

Télécom Bretagne Robotics Club

Every year the engineering students of the Télécom Bretagne Robotics Club (lien à remettre) design a robot. This year’s robot, Krabi, finished 39th (out of approximately 160 competitors) at the robotics competition, Coupe de France 2010.

Telecom Bretagne students will show Krabi to the public, along with its game platform (2,10 m x 3 m), at the Fête de la science. They will take delight in recounting the technical and human adventure they had designing their robot and participating in the Coupe de France.

Fête de la science

The Fête de la science is a national event, organized annually by the Ministry of Education and Research, as part of its “Science and Society” objective. It aims to encourage exchanges between citizens and the world of research. Students and faculty from Télécom Bretagne participate in the Fête every year, as part of the “Village des sciences” organized by Abret.
