The jury of the 2009 Prize for the best doctoral thesis in biomedical engineering recently awarded its prize for best thesis in the “Innovation” category to Guillaume Dardenne for his work on Ultrasound Evaluation of the Pelvic Dynamic: Application to Total Arthroplasty of the Hip in Computer-Navigated Surgery.

The prize was award at Paris city hall on May 21st, during the ceremony of the 6th Innovative Medical Technology competition organized by the AGBM.

Guillaume Dardenne’s thesis work brought together both methodological and applied facets, and was carried out at the Latim-Inserm U650 laboratory under the direction of Chafiaa Hamitouche-Djabou (professor at Télécom Bretagne) and Éric Stindel (orthopedic surgeon at the CHRU teaching hospital in Brest).

Working on a multidisciplinary topic, Guillaume Dardenne made an original and decisive contribution toward the improvement of precision and reliability in the insertion of total hip replacements. This surgical procedure becomes more effective by integrating specific information about the particular patient’s pelvic structure, using ultrasound technology. Over the course of his thesis work, Guillaume Dardenne registered two patents and published 14 articles, two of which appeared in international peer-reviewed journals.

He is currently developing his offer of service in the Télécom Bretagne incubator through the company he created recently, Ostesys.

Find out more: This prize, which was created jointly by the EMBS Chapter of the IEEE France Section, the French Society for Biological and Medical Engineering (SFGBM) and the Alliance for Biological and Medical Engineering (AGBM), rewards excellent thesis work with great potential for technological transfer. The international jury is composed of people representing the key players in the field (researchers, physicians, biologists and industrial partners).
